CHAPTER TEN

“Damn,” Jose Juarez looked at the crates stuffed into the back of the heavy military truck. “That’s a nice haul.”

“Ain’t it?” Clay asked him, smiling.

The ‘haul’ was indeed something else. Most of the crates were munitions, fortunately, but there was still some very nice equipment there. Clay had left a half-dozen M4s, two dozen mags and five thousand rounds of ammunition with Van Bronson, along with four grenades. The big deputy couldn’t imagine a scenario where he’d need it all, but decided it was nice to have.

All-in-all, the Sanders Ranch left Lewiston far better than they had found it and gotten repaid for it handsomely.

“There are ten M1As in there, and another half-dozen M4s. We left six of those with Bronson,” Clay explained. “Four crates of mags including one for the M1s, one about half-and-half, and the rest for the M4s. One crate full of frag grenades, one with some smoke and some 203 rounds. One is nothing but Claymores, another the same with C4, det cord and other goodies. There is one crate with commo gear and even some NVG, but whether it works or not, I don’t know. The rest is ammunition. Three crates of 7.62 and four of 5.56. Rough count is…well, it’s a lot,” he finished tiredly.

“That’s…very fortunate for us,” Jose mused.

“From everything I could see, the guy was a genuine gunrunner. Complete with bombs set to go off on a hair trigger. Sometimes even we get lucky,” Clay shrugged. “Listen, man. I’m ragged out. I know there’s a lot of stuff here, but we’ll deal tomorrow if that’s okay?”

“Sure,” Jose agreed. “Lot of stuff,” he added, looking at the loaded trailers.

“A lot of things we needed,” Clay agreed. “If we hadn’t already made the deal with Columbia, we could probably get by without them.”

“Want to cancel?” Jose asked.

“No,” Clay shook his head. “We really do need them as a future trade partner. Having Lewiston will help once they’re back on their feet.”

-

“Wow.”

Charles Swift was examining the load of materials brought back from Lewiston, clearly pleased with what he was seeing.

“Right?” Jake Sidell asked, standing next to him with a grin. “I mean, it’s not enough by itself to do everything, probably, but it will go a long way. Right?”

“Absolutely,” Swift nodded eagerly. “Even without the lumber this is great. With the lumber included, it’s just outstanding!”

“Glad we could be of help,” Clay arrived, clasping the carpenter on the shoulder. He had slept soundly the night before but was up before sunrise and ready to go.

“This will go a long way in upping the standard of living around here,” Swift told his boss. “The one thing I don’t see is septic tanks. Well, that and field line. I don’t suppose you have a couple of those stashed somewhere.”

All Jake and Clay could do was to look toward one another, and then back to Swift.

“Septic tanks?” they asked in unison.

“I’ll assume that means you didn’t get any of them, then,” Swift sighed.

“Didn’t even think of it,” both admitted, again in unison.
